Do I Need to File a Thai Tax Return?
The honest flowchart version: most expats don't need to file. Some really do and don't know it. Here's how to tell which one you are.
You probably DON'T need to file if…
- You were in Thailand under 180 days this year, AND
- All your income is foreign-sourced and stays abroad
You probably DO need to file if…
- ✅ A Thai employer pays you (they withhold, but year-end filing may still apply)
- ✅ You're a freelancer/contractor with Thai clients paying into Thai accounts
- ✅ You're a tax resident who remitted post-2024 foreign income into Thailand (new rules)
- ✅ You earn rent, dividends or interest from Thai sources above thresholds
Key facts
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Form | P.N.D. 90/91 (personal income tax) |
| Deadline | April 8 following the tax year |
| Late penalty | Surcharge + penalty % on unpaid tax; filing late with zero due still better than not filing |
| Where | Any Revenue District office or online via RD e-Filing |
| Tax ID needed? | Yes — get a P.N.D.91/TIN at any district office with passport + visa (free, fast) |
Still unsure? The 3-question shortcut
- Did Thai money pay you this year? → likely yes-file
- Did foreign money enter my Thai bank account while I was resident? → check with the remittance checker
- Neither? → probably no filing obligation this year
