The numbers (save these now)

Reality check: public ambulance response is variable outside central Bangkok. For serious emergencies many expats call their nearest PRIVATE hospital directly — private hospitals run their own ambulance fleets.

The hospital decision tree

1. Life-threatening? → Nearest hospital, period. Stabilization is legally required regardless of payment.
2. Serious but stable? → Private hospital matching your insurance network (Bumrungrad/BNH/Samitivej tier in BKK; provincial Bangkok Hospital branches elsewhere).
3. Routine issue? → Walk-in clinic or your registered SSO hospital if you're employed locally.

The insurance procedure (do this right or claims die)

1. Call your insurer's hotline BEFORE non-life-threatening treatment when possible — they direct you to network hospitals and arrange guarantee-of-payment letters
2. No GoP letter = you pay upfront and reclaim: keep EVERY receipt, report, and itemized bill

Police reports: when you actually need one

• Theft/passport loss: required for embassy replacement documents
• Traffic accidents: required for insurance; use Tourist Police 1155 if language stalls the process
• Tourist Police exist precisely for foreigners — use them over regular stations when practical

Losing your passport

Police report → your embassy (Bangkok for most; honorary consuls in Chiang Mai/Phuket) → emergency travel document → immigration updates your entry record. Budget 1–3 days.
